Hi readers! In this edition you are going to learn about me. For those who wonder I am not fifteen years old (just kidding). I am thirty years old and I graduated from Southwestern College with an Associate Degree in Public Administration. Currently, I am working on my Bachelor’s Degree at San Diego State University. I started working at Southwestern College almost five years ago as a student-worker in the Evaluations Department. After graduating from SWC, I was offered an hourly position at Financial Aid department, which I enjoyed a lot!
Now, I am here working for the Language and Literature department! I am part of the English as a Second Language (ESL) division. My position entails many responsibilities such as providing assistance and information to ESL students regarding student services programs, campus resources and financial aid programs. I like to think of myself as a resource person that really enjoys helping people.
As a former ESL student at Southwestern College, I see myself reflected in any ESL student. I know what it is like to come to another country where you find so many cultural differences. I understand the culture shock that many of us encounter. Five years ago, I was terrified of speaking English, I could not express myself because I was scared, just as many of you are right now. My voice was not heard because I could not communicate appropriately and there was so much I wanted to say, but I had little help unfortunately. |
As a result, this is where my passion of helping people comes from. I made a solid promise to myself of helping people as much as I can if language was a barrier to success.I feel fulfilled when I help students who are struggling to adapt to the U.S. education system. Sometimes, it takes just a minute and finding the right words to help a student feel motivated. I really enjoy what I do!
I have two hobbies that I really enjoy. I love hiking and traveling. Also, I like to read almost any kind of book, even though sometimes I don’t have enough time to dedicate to this important habit. My favorite author is Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist is one of my favorite books from this writer. Finally, if you are reading my spotlight description, please know that I am here to offer you my help as a professional and as a human being too. I promise to do my best to help you resolve any academic issue on time. Thank you, Angie Barrera |
